Free web hosting vs. Paid web hosting

We all know what web hosting companies do - they provide space for website owners so they make their websites accessible all across the WWW. The constantly rising number of web hosting companies can be generally classified in two categories - paid hosting and free hosting. So what is the difference...

The first scenario is when a web hosting company provides the customer a web hosting account where he can upload his website files at no cost at all. This type of hosting is ideal for beginners and people who intend to have a small personal website. You will probably ask yourselves "why do they do that for free " ... well, there's a catch. There is always a catch. Companies that provide web space at no cost require that you place ads and banners on your website. This is how they earn their money. Of course, this is not a pain if you're just experimenting on the web or having a small personal website. However, if you decide to host a "serious" or a business website, those ads will probably not look good on your page. That's where you need to switch to the other type of web hosting company - the paid one. This is where the customer pays a monthly fee for his hosting account and respectively is not forced by the web hosting company to display any ads. Those monthly fees vary from company to company and of course depend on the amount of disk space and monthly bandwidth that you purchase.
The revenue that the paid web hosting service companies get is through the fee that is paid by the web site owners. In case of free web site hosting companies, the main source of income are the ads and banners that can be placed on their clients web pages.
Free web hosting has it's advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage of free web hosting is that it is actually free and it is perfect for people just starting out that need to put a small website on the internet. Many of the free hosting companies also provide easy to use tools that help you publish your content in no time and make it publicly available instantly. This is due to the fact that free webhosts are used mainly by newbies.
Of course, since we all know that nothing is free, there are also certain disadvantages of free web hosting. The main one is that you're forced by the web hosting company to display ads on your website and all the income from those banners goes to the web hosting company. Some free webhosts also do not allow customers to place their own banners on their websites. Another disadvantage is the domain name. If you don't own your own domain name, you will have to use a free subdomain within the hosting company's domains. This way all your visitors will know that you're on a free host. This is not the case with paid web hosting companies. There you get your unique domain name. And last but not least, free web hosts provide a very limited amount of disk space and monthly bandwidth for your website, while at paid hosting you can purchase exactly what your website needs.

So, free or paid - the decision is all yours.
