What to ask before you buy
Having a website is a must for every business. Signing up with the wrong hosting company can cost you money and bad reputation, so here is a list of what you should ask before you buy web hosting.
Your main concern should be technical support.
1. Do they have 24/7 support
2. How is it provided? (email, ticketing, phone, skype...)
3. What exactly does it provide. Do they help you with non-server related issues.
Hosting plan specs. Disk space and bandwidth.
4. How much disk space is offered
5. How much bandwidth is included
6. Can you purchase more if you need it. What is the cost?
7. Do they oversell their resources
Domains
8. How many domains are you allowed to host.
9. What is the charge for extra domains
10. What are the domain name registration and renewal fees.
11. How long does it take to have it set up.
Backup and security
12. How secure the server is?
13. Which versions of web server software are they using
14. Is there a backup of the customer files.
15. Does the datacenter have the necessary power failure equipment.
Management
16. What type of control panel they provide. You should be able to see a working demo.
17. How do you upload your files and make changes to your website.
E-mail
18. How many e-mail accounts are included in your package
19. Do they provide pop3/imap access to your accounts
20. Are your e-mails within the domain name that you will be hosting
21. Do they offer SSL for your pop3/imap/smtp connections
And finally and most important - the cost
22. Are there any hidden fees
23. What is the contract period
24. Can you pay monthly or you have to prepay for the whole year ( you should usually get a discount for prepaying the whole year)
